MFK after the notice: cloudy headlights and a track rod end

A ten-year-old small car and the inspection notice in the letterbox. The pre-check found three points the inspection would have failed.

  • Small car, 2016
  • MFK inspection prep
  • We took it to the inspection
On a real garage’s website, photos of its own workshop go here instead of drawings.

The starting point

The owner had received the notice for the periodic vehicle inspection (MFK) and wanted to be sure the car would pass first time.

Our pre-check

We went over the car on the inspection points and found three faults:

  1. Headlights: the plastic lenses were yellowed and cloudy, so the light was weak. On top of that, the left headlight was set too high.
  2. Front right track rod end: noticeable play.
  3. Number plate light: one bulb not working.

The list of faults had a price for each point. For the headlights, the owner chose restoration over replacement.

What we did

  • Sanded, polished and sealed the headlight lenses
  • Realigned the headlights
  • Replaced the track rod end, then measured and set the wheel alignment
  • Replaced the number plate bulb
  • Took the car to the road traffic office for the inspection

Result

Passed the inspection with no faults. The owner only had to drop off the key and pick the car up again.

Restored headlights go cloudy again over the years. If the lenses are badly weathered, replacing them is sometimes worth it. We tell you what makes sense in your case.
